In general, coughing is considered absolutely normal and not harmful at all. It can also help to keep your throat clear of phlegm and other such irritants. However normal it might be, coughing can be a symptom of many conditions including allergy, viral infections or a bacterial infection. There are simple ways to get rid of cough.

Use Honey

The most trusted and honored remedy for sore throat is honey.  According to some studies, it can cure cough better than medicines that contain Dextromethorphan (DM), which is a cough suppressant.  You can take 2 teaspoons of honey and add it to an herbal tea or warm water with lemon to make your own home remedy to cure cough. The honey soothes as the lemon juice help to congest.  You can also take a spoonful of honey and eat it or spread it out on bread for snacking. This is the easiest way to get rid of cough.

Probiotics Intake

The microorganisms which provides host of health benefits are probiotics. They don’t help in curing the cough directly but they do help in balancing the gastrointestinal flora which are the bacteria living in your intestines.

By balancing it, this supports the immune system function throughout the entire body. Studies also indicate that it contains Lactobacillus which is a bacterium in dairy and can reduce the chances of catching flu and allergens like pollen.

Secured milk can be a great source of Lactobacillus but one should be cautious using it as dairy might make phlegm thicker. There are also probiotic supplements available in most of the heath food and drug stores for you to buy. Different supplements have different daily recommended intakes. They are also present in some types of yogurt, in miso soup and sourdough breads.

Peppermint Technique

Peppermint leaves have extra ordinary healing properties. A substance present in peppermint known as menthol helps in soothing the throat by acting as a decongestant and breaking down mucus.  You can intake it by drinking peppermint tea or by inhaling its vapors through a steamed bath. Add 3 to 4 drops of peppermint oil into every 150 mm of hot water in order to make a steam bath, put a towel over your head and take deep breaths above the water.

Thyme Tea

Thyme is consumed to cure many respiratory illnesses. Studies indicate that the essence taken from the thyme leaves and mixing it with ivy can cure cough and short term bronchitis. Their leaf contains flavonoids. Which are compounds that relax the throat muscles. They are involved in coughing and reduces inflammation.

To make thyme tea at home, take 2 teaspoons of crushed thyme leaves and add them in 1 cup of boiling water. Cover the cup by steeping it for 10 minutes and strain it afterwards.
